NFL youngsters make the big league

Eltham duo Nick Vlastuin and Daniel Currie and Mill Park junior Nathan Hrovat were all snapped up by AFL clubs on Thursday night, along with Macleod youngster Aidan Corr.

Vlastuin, who captained Vic Metro in the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 National Championships, was taken by Richmond with pick No.9.

Vlastuin’s big frame and ability to win the contested ball have insiders touting him as a near certain Round 1 starter next season.

Coincidentally, his first captain is likely to be another NFL junior with former West Preston junior Trent Cotchin expected to be named the Tigers’ captain within days.

Despite expectations that he would land at either North Melbourne or Collingwood, Hrovat slipped through to pick No.21 where Western Bulldogs pounced on the classy midfielder.

Hrovat captained the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup this season and was a vice-captain to Vlastuin for Vic Metro.

Not only was he part of Metro’s six-man leadership group, Hrovat was also named its Most Valuable Player at the championships and was selected in the midfield of the Under-18 All Australian team, along with Vlastuin who has selected on the half back flank.

Eltham ruckman Daniel Currie got a second chance at AFL level when he was recruited to North Melbourne with pick No.56.

The brother of Eltham captain Paul, 22-year-old Currie was previously selected by Sydney in 2006 but failed to play a game.

Currie was the second brother of an NFL player to be selected, with Northern Knights defender Aidan Corr drafted by GWS with selection No.14.

Corr, the brother of Macleod forward Cathal, played two games with Macleod seniors in 2011 and will fill a key defensive post for the Giants.

The NFL wishes all four the very best of luck in their AFL careers and looks forward to seeing them shine at the top level.
