There was a mixture of big victories and tight contests in yesterday afternoon’s slate of senior women’s games.
Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1
St Mary’s continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 96-point victory over West Preston-Lakeside at Telfer Reserve. The Burra had 26 scoring shots to the Roosters five in the 17.9 (111) to 2.3 (15) win. Sarah Johnston finished with a bag of seven while Megan Girolami kicked six of her own. Emmison Zealley was yet again sublime alongside Charlotte Evans while Ashleigh Snow and Sarina Galanti continued their great starts to the season.
Banyule claimed their third consecutive victory at Beverley Road Oval, defeated Eltham by 37 points. The Bears trailed by 21 points at quarter before kicking 11 goals to just two in the final three quarters to win 12.7 (79) to 6.6 (42). Olivia Perillo, Jemma McCarthy and Megan Barnes had terrific performances for the Bears. Jordan Kelly and Willow Priest also had solid outings for the Panthers while Michaela Molenberg and Emily Wunderlich kicked two goals each.
A tight contest at Montmorency Park North Oval saw Montmorency 1 return to the winners list with a 10-point victory over Heidelberg. After a tight first half which saw the Tigers lead by five points at the main break, a four goal to two behind third term from the Magpies saw them claim the 5.4 (34) to 3.6 (24) victory. Madeleine Ellis, Isabel Villarreal and Madeline Gallagher were all key in the Magpies victory. Nikki Watts was terrific for the Tigers, finishing as the game’s only multiple goalscorer.
Cleaning Melbourne Division 2
Panton Hill returned to the winners list with a two-point victory over Greensborough at A.E. Cracknell Reserve. It was a tight and seesawing contest throughout, with the biggest margin being 14 points in favour of the hosts. The Redbacks pulled through though and claimed the 5.9 (39) to 5.7 (37) win at home. Stephanie Jacobson and Jessica Hall were terrific in the victory while Jayde Harte finished with two goals. Ari Gosden kicked three for the Borough who were once again well led by Jessie Hulett and Bridgette Taylor-Gray.
Fitzroy Stars handed Hurstbridge their first loss of the season, with 91 points separating the two sides by full time at Sir Doug Nicholls Oval. The Stars kept the Bridges to just 0.1 (1) and kicked 13.13 (91) themselves to claim a second consecutive victory at home over a newcomer in the division. Kaelun Brown’s side were once again filled with contributors, from Medika Bonney and captain Stephanie Briggs to Rose Stewart and Tiarna Steel. Brooke Taylor and Kristy Steven fought hard all day for the Bridges.
Lower Plenty made it two wins from two since returning to Division 2 after defeating South Morang by 30 points at Montmorency Park South Oval. South Morang took a one-goal lead at quarter time before the Bears took the lead heading into the main break. Lower then proceeded to kick three goals and keep the Lions scoreless in the second half to secure the 6.10 (46) to 2.4 (16) win. Ava Klaic was sublime in the victory alongside Jordan Henry (in game 50) and Milla Fereday (two goals). Devony Hoare and Hailey Cordova were yet again the two best players for the Lions.
Kilmore won its first game since being promoted into Division 2, defeating Darebin 1 by 62 points at A.H. Capp Reserve. Andy Stewart’s side kicked five goals to just one in the first term and never put their foot off the gas in the 13.8 (86) to 3.6 (24) victory. Jessica Vilinskis, Jenaya Stewart and Chiara Nardo were all superb, with Nardo and Stewart kicking a game-high three goals each. Karmen Wong was serviceable in the Falcons and was one of three individual goalkickers for them.
NFNL Division 3 Women’s
Montmorency 2 kicked off a big day for the Magpies senior women’s sides with a 70-point win over Darebin 2 in the first senior women’s game of the day at A.H. Capp Reserve. The Magpies kicked eight goals to two in the opening half and kept the Falcons scoreless for three quarters in the 12.10 (82) to 2.0 (12) victory. Shelby Coall and Monique Migotto finished with four goals each while Charlotte Playfair and Stefanie Adamovskis. Chloe Horner was solid for the Falcons alongside Mia Brown who was their only goalkicker.
Diamond Creek Women’s 2 made it four wins on the trot with a 49-point victory over Epping at Plenty Park Oval. The Creekers kicked 50+ points for the third consecutive weekend, finishing on 9.6 (60) and keeping Epping to 1.5 (11). Poppy Strickland and Isabella Hazelwood-Smith had stellar performances alongside Grace Addamo and Imogen Hammond, who kicked seven goals between then. Abi Morgan fought hard all day alongside Molly Quinn and Cindy Turnbull.
The closest contest in Division 3 yesterday took place at De Winton Park where Macleod claimed a seven-point win over Whittlesea. Only two points separated the two sides at half time before a two goal to one second half saw the Roos hold on for a 3.2 (20) to 2.1 (13) victory. Kayla North’s was the game’s leading goalkicker with two goals and was one of Macleod’s best players alongside Ally Gunstone and Rebecca Stellini. Tahlia Brander had another terrific performance and was well supported by Olivia Hodgson and Eden Attard.
North Heidelberg extended their winning streak to three with a 28-point victory over local rivals Heidelberg West at Heidelberg Park. After taking a 1.5 (11) to 1.1 (7) lead at quarter time the Bulldogs kicked three goals and kept the Hawks to just one behind in the final three quarters of the match to secure the 4.12 (36) to 1.2 (8) win. Teresa Cassar kicked another two goals and was a key player in the Bulldogs victory yet again alongside Meg Harper and Ellouise Bishop. Jess Campbell was excellent for the Hawks alongside Molly Reinke.
Thomastown won their first game of the season by nine points over Laurimar at Main Street Recreation Reserve. In a scrappy affair the Bears kicked the only goal of the contest in the opening term, eventually finishing on 1.3 (9) and holding Laurimar to 0.0 (0). Amanda Mowlam was the only goalkicker for the match and one of the Bears better players alongside Julie Milevski and captain Cara Mazzarella. Adama Neary had one of her best games so far this year for the Power.
Reservoir had another heart stopping win at Crispe Park, this time defeating Wallan by three points. The Mustangs led at the first two breaks before the Magpies snatched the lead heading into the final term. Troy Lange’s side then kicked the only score of the last term to help get them over the line 4.3 (27) to 4.0 (24). Giuseppina Tarantello kicked three of the four goals for the Mustangs and was sublime along with Tamara Cole and Briana Francis-Goard. Emily Frankenberg had a similar performance to Tarantello, finishing as the Magpies best and kicking three goals also.
