An enthralling Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1 Women’s Friday night clash between Heidelberg and St Mary’s ended in a draw at Warringal Park.
After a cracking start for Heidelberg, who played a consistent four quarters against the top team in St Mary’s, there unfortunately could not be a winner, with both sides locked on 2.3 (15) apiece by the final siren.
Rebekah Miller provided a strong presence in the back half of the ground with her strong tackles and excellent ball movement. Mikayla Lee was continuously creating options in the forward 50 but unfortunately could not convert at times.
Emily De Sando, Amelie Gilchrist and Alice Jesser also had excellent games for Heidelberg, creating plenty of opportunities for their forwards.
For St Mary’s, Jessica Fitzpatrick and Emmison Zealley kept the backline afloat with their terrific pressure and second efforts.
Trying to get the ball out of the danger zone and into their forward 50, the duo put their bodies on the line and pushed for the ball to be in their favour.
Sarah Johnston and Georgia Kitchell put on an excellent display in attack and up forward alongside Megan Girolami for the Burra.
With a goalless first quarter, Heidelberg stood up to their competition with Taylor Harwood, Rebekah Miller and Mikayla Lee rising to the occasion in that period for both sides.
Starting off the second quarter Megan Girolami kicked not only the first goal for St Mary’s, but also the first goal of the game four minutes into the term.
Just minutes after Girolami kicked the first goal of the game it was Mikayla Lee who stood tall for Heidelberg and kicked her first of 2 goals.
St Mary’s though continued to pick up the pace in the 2nd quarter adding pressure to their back half making it hard for Heidelberg to perform.
It was star backliner Jessica Fitzpatrick who worked her way up from the backline to kick a much-needed goal for St Marys getting them the lead by six points at the main break.
Heidelberg continued to press in the third term, gaining plenty of territory but being unable to convert in front of goal.
St Mary’s threatened at times in the third but couldn’t create many meaningful opportunities in attack, resulting in another goalless term.
The only goal kicked in the second half came off the boot of Mikayla Lee early in the last, resulting in the Tigers taking a one-point lead.
Troy Bickerton’s team then pressed even harder after that goal but were only rewarded with one behind.
Through a tough fight in tough conditions there was no winner, with both teams finishing the game on 15 points.
