Round 6 of Melbourne Greyhounds Division 1 delivered a series of impressive performances as several sides strengthened their finals credentials, while others were left searching for answers.
Montmorency continued its impressive run of form with a commanding victory over Greensborough, moving into fourth position on the ladder after another polished performance. The Magpies set the tone early with a dominant first half, booting ten goals to four and controlling territory and possession around the contest.
Nash Holmes was once again sensational for Montmorency, collecting 26 disposals and kicking four goals in one of the standout individual performances of the round. Marcus Lentini also had a huge impact through the midfield with 32 disposals and a goal, helping the Pies maintain their lead throughout the afternoon.
Despite the loss, Brody Glenn provided a spark for Greensborough, finishing with five goals from 11 disposals in an efficient performance inside 50. Jackson Davies (20 disposals) and Ben Ham (19 disposals) battled hard around the ball, but the Borough struggled to contain Montmorency’s midfield dominance for long periods of the game and now sit six points adrift of the top five.
Eltham produced a powerful final quarter to run over the top of Banyule and secure an important 13-point win, pushing the Panthers into third place on the ladder. The Bears looked the stronger side early and controlled much of the contest in the opening half, but inaccurate kicking in front of goal proved costly.
Banyule’s 4.9 first half allowed Eltham to remain within striking distance, and the Panthers made the most of their opportunities late as they stormed home to claim the four points.
Jason McCormick continued his brilliant start to the 2026 season with another influential display, recording 27 disposals and a goal. Alexander Bellchambers was also instrumental with 26 disposals and a major, providing strong drive around stoppages and transition.
For the Bears, Jean-Luc Velissaris was outstanding in defeat, finishing with 28 disposals, 12 clearances, and a goal in a dominant midfield effort. Oliver Poole also impressed with 19 disposals and seven marks as Banyule was left to rue missed opportunities.
Heidelberg’s unbeaten run remains intact after the Tigers powered past Bundoora by 48 points in another dominant display from the reigning premiers. While the Bulls were competitive early, Heidelberg completely took over in the second term with a devastating nine-goal-to-one quarter that broke the game wide open.
The Tigers’ ball movement and midfield pressure proved too much for Bundoora to handle as Heidelberg improved to 6-0 and further cemented itself as the benchmark of the competition.
Luke Bunker was excellent with 26 disposals, while Dylan Clarke added 22 disposals and five clearances in a strong all-round midfield performance. Solomon Mackay also played an important role with 21 disposals and six inside 50s as Heidelberg consistently generated scoring opportunities.
For Bundoora, O’Neill Moncrieff continued his excellent individual form with 26 disposals and 11 clearances in a tireless effort through the middle. Tom Fry (20 disposals, one goal) and Isaac McMillan (19 disposals, two goals) also worked hard as they have regularly this season.
Diamond Creek responded in emphatic fashion with a massive 98-point win over West Preston-Lakeside, producing arguably its best performance since being promoted to Division 1.
From the opening bounce, the Creekers controlled the game around the contest and punished the Roosters on the scoreboard.
The headline performance came from Carlton VFL-listed forward Liam Farrar, who delivered a remarkable outing with 22 disposals, 12 marks (including 11 contested) and ten goals in a truly unstoppable display. Farrar’s aerial dominance and accuracy in front of goal proved far too much for the Roosters’ defence to handle.
Diamond Creek also showcased impressive depth across the ground, with nine players finishing with 15 or more disposals in a complete team performance.
For West Preston-Lakeside, Arben Dani continued to fight hard despite the heavy defeat, finishing with 30 disposals in one of the few positives for the Roosters on another difficult day.
Hurstbridge overcame inaccurate kicking in front of goal to secure a hard-fought 14-point victory over North Heidelberg in a tough and physical contest. The Bridges were able to establish an early advantage during the first half and managed to maintain that lead for the remainder of the afternoon despite missed chances in front of goal.
Blake Fitzgerald continued his outstanding season with another dominant midfield performance, collecting 35 disposals, 19 contested possessions, 15 clearances, and a goal in a best-on-ground effort. Liam Middleton and Harry O’Brien both provided excellent support with 22 disposals each as Hurstbridge controlled key moments around the stoppages.
For North Heidelberg, Brock Chircop battled strongly throughout the game, finishing with 19 disposals, seven clearances, five inside 50s, and two goal assists.
While the Bulldogs remained within striking distance for much of the contest, Hurstbridge’s early lead ultimately proved enough to secure the win.
The Bridges will now ready themselves for what should be a great contest against a red-hot Montmorency side next weekend.
