Battle of the top…and bottom

Published on Wednesday, June 11, 2014

IN a remarkable twist of fate, this weekend’s action will be headlined by top of the table clashes in all three senior competitions.

The league’s oldest rivals, Greensborough and Heidelberg, will be competing for first spot on the Division 1 ladder when they meet at War Memorial Park.

The first-placed Boro will assume a four-point and percentage buffer at the top of the ladder with a win, while a Heidelberg victory would allow it to take back first place from its oldest foe.

Division 2 ladder-leader North Heidelberg will host Mernda at Shelley Reserve, with the Bulldogs looking to extend their unbeaten run to nine matches.

The Bulldogs won the first outing between the sides by 48 points in Round 2, however a Mernda victory would enable it to move equal on points with the Bulldogs.

In Division 3, unbeaten Thomastown welcomes unbeaten Reservoir to Main Street Reserve.

The Bears hold an 8-0 record in 2014 and proved far too good for the Mustangs in Round 3 this year, claiming an 83-point win away at Crispe Park.

That defeat remains Reservoir’s sole loss for the year, and, similar to Mernda, it can move within percentage of top place with a win this weekend.

Making this week’s action all the more extraordinary, the bottom two sides in all three senior competitions will also meet on Saturday.

In Division 1, Whittlesea will be on the hunt for its first win of the season when it hosts ninth-placed Northcote Park at the Whittlesea Showgrounds.

The Cougars have claimed just one win and a draw from eight matches this season, but will move 10 points clear of the bottom spot on the ladder should they claim the four points this weekend.

Whittlesea was victorious by 33 points the last time the sides met at the venue, although the loss proved to be the turning point in the Cougars’ 2012 season, dropping only one of 11 games thereafter en route to a famous premiership win.

In Division 2, local neighbours Hurstbridge and Diamond Creek resume their rivalry when they meet at Ben Frilay Oval.

The Bridges (2-6) currently sit in seventh-place on the ladder, ahead of only the bottom-placed Creekers (1-7).

Following a disappointing start to the season, Brian Hardman has replaced David Calthorpe as senior coach of Diamond Creek and will coach his first game this weekend.

Still without a victory this year, Parkside will also be searching for its first points in Division 3 when it hosts St Mary’s at Pitcher Park.

The sixth-placed Burra are still a chance to play finals this year and can potentially move within four points of the top four should results go their way this weekend.
