A late Greensborough charge and a fast start by the Bundoora Comets featured in Round 4 of Section 1 netball.
BORO SURGE LATE
Greensborough should remain in Section 1 following its 19-goal win over Eltham in the final game before re-grading.
A scrappy first quarter saw many turnovers as neither team was able to stake its claim on the game in the opening quarter.
Intercepts were aplenty as a period midway through the quarter saw the ball go back and forth for several minutes, whilst the score line remained three-all until Eltham goaled.
An after the siren free shot by Greensborough shooter Kate Cook kept the scores level going into the second quarter.
The Borough began to separate itself from Eltham in this term, as it scored six goals to open the quarter before Eltham got its first.
Greensborough’s players were able to find open space to run to, as Eltham had two held ball calls go against it in the quarter, with its attacking half looking crowded at times.
The tight tussle seen in the first quarter was again evident at the start of the third quarter with no team scoring a goal for the first two minutes, until Eltham was able to break the deadlock.
However, Greensborough responded straight away and was able to add 10 goals for the quarter, whilst keeping Eltham to just four goals.
The Borough’s shooters showed good movement in the circle, with Cook chasing hard to keep the ball in court resulting in a goal by Bianca Power.
A lead of 12 goals by Greensborough began to be fought back by Eltham who carried the momentum for the first half of the final quarter.
However, it only cut back the deficit to nine goals before Greensborough piled on ten unanswered goals.
The final quarter was Greensborough’s highest scoring quarter of the game, as it finished the match strongly with 14 goals on its way to a comfortable 19-goal win.
Final score: Greensborough 1 (43) def Eltham (24)
QUICK START PROPELS COMETS
Bundoora was able to hold off a Fitzroy Stars fight back in Section1, as a lead of eight goals at quarter time meant it never surrendered the lead it held throughout the game.
The Comets had an outstanding opening quarter, as they scored 11 goals to Fitzroy’s three in a dominant display in all positions.
The Comets defense was strong with goal keeper Liz Edwards and wing defence Karlee De Bono registering intercepts in Fitzroy’s attacking third, whilst their attackers converted accurately down the opposite end of the court.
Fitzroy’s defence was strong in the second quarter, at times successfully slowing Bundoora’s attacking duo of Elly Castles and Chloe Wilson.
Sophie Atkinson also shot accurately, even at one point using her height to stop a high pass from going out of court, as she shot the majority of her team’s goals for the quarter.
Even though the second quarter was a more even contest, Bundoora’s impressive opening quarter meant it still held a lead of nine goals at half-time.
Despite being double teamed at times, Atkinson continued to play well and score goals, as Fitzroy began to decrease its deficit.
It got within three goals during the quarter, although this was too close for comfort for Bundoora who tried to extend its lead.
However, it was only a short time where the Comets held the momentum, and the Stars entered the last quarter only four goals behind, and looking a real chance to come from behind and win.
But this was not to be as Bundoora started the final quarter firing, quickly adding five unanswered goals in the first two minutes.
A long range shot by the Comets’ shooter brought their lead to ten goals and despite some pushes by Fitzroy they looked home, ending the game seven-goal winners.
Final score: Bundoora Comets 1 (40) def Fitzroy Stars 1 (33)
