Greensborough cruised to victory in their Winning Edge Division 1 women’s battle with Lower Plenty-Bundoora, winning by 56 points to leapfrog them on the ladder.

Off the back of an impressive 37-point win over the VU Western Spurs last week, the Borough were again dominant in all four quarters to claim their third triumph of the season.

Only inaccuracy in front of goal prevented Stew Lewis’ side from winning by more, but it was the only problem they had all afternoon finishing 9.21 (75) to 3.1 (19) victors.

The Borough now jump ahead of Lower Plenty-Bundoora into sixth spot while the combined side sit second last albeit still two games clear of bottom.

Bree Unthank and Sarah Huber backed up their impressive performances last week with another solid effort while Ashleigh Smith was the best for the home side.

The visitors made their intent known from the first bounce, as Kyla Parry opened up the scoring with a fantastic snap under pressure before the in-form Unthank quickly lengthened the Borough’s lead.

Lower Plenty-Bundoora mustered just one behind during the first term but only trailed by just under three goals at the first change.

The Borough continued their relentless approach in the second term causing the home side to turn ball over on multiple occasions, Parry capitalising on one occasion to kick her second.

Michaela Molenberg was able to put through Lower Plenty-Bundoora’s first major of the afternoon shortly afterwards, but Greensborough continued to dominate.

If there was any fault in the Borough’s performance up to this point it was simply that they could not convert their dominance into goals, adding a further seven behinds to their score to lead by 23 at the main break.

Rebecca Buckley scored her first goal of the season for the visitors and while the attacking flow didn’t waver, the Borough still couldn’t take advantage, kicking just one major from six scoring shots.

Emma Stephens was able to provide a counterbalance for the home side with a major of her own to reduce the margin to 28 points at three quarter time.

But in what was almost inevitable, Greensborough kicked into another gear in the final term, rewarding their hard work from the previous three quarters.

Buckley was able to add three goals to take her match tally to four while Lanarose Picioane also got in on the action, slotting two of her own to make up Greensborough’s five majors of the quarter.

Molenberg did what she could up forward, making the most of an opportunity to kick her second goal, but Lower Plenty-Bundoora proved no match for a Borough side who recorded their biggest winning margin in season 2022.
