MONTMORENCY will host a full day of female football on Sunday, which will include the club’s inaugural senior womens match.
The Magpies will make history this Sunday when they play their first ever match in the Victorian Womens Football League (VWFL).
Montmorency’s VWFL team will be hosting Bayswater at 1pm at Para Rd.
This is an exciting new venture for the Montmorency Football and Netball Club and is a natural expansion upon its prosperous and expanding junior female football program.
The Montmorency VWFL team will be coached by NFL representative coach Craig Shillinglaw and be captained by Bec Leahy.
The team has come together very well and numbers are fantastic for a new start-up team.
The team enjoys the full support of both the Montmorency senior and junior clubs and all is in readiness for a great season.
Peter Gray, the instigator of the Montmorency female program, said he was proud of the club’s achievements in female football.
“To go from zero female players in 2011 to three junior teams and a senior team in 2014 is something we are very proud of at Montmorency," he said.
“The way the whole club has got behind our female program and supported it has been fantastic.
"We have had a lot of success in the junior female program and a VWFL team was a natural extension.
"In 2013 we won the under-15 girls flag and our under-18 coach Celia Piesse was named the Victorian Female Coach of the Year.
"We have had a fantastic sub-committee driving the formation of our VWFL team and we are all excited about this Sunday’s inaugural match."
