Diamond Creek further enhanced its premiership credentials, Heidelberg responded emphatically after its first loss of the year and Bundoora returned to the winners list.
Diamond Creek‘s remarkable run of form continued on Saturday, defeating second-placed Montmorency just one week after becoming the first side to topple ladder leader Heidelberg.
In a contest that remained tight throughout the afternoon, neither side was able to gain complete control. The Creekers appeared to have done enough when they extended the margin to 21 points midway through the final quarter, but Montmorency mounted one last charge and closed to within a point before the final siren. Ultimately, Diamond Creek held firm to claim another statement victory.
Nash Holmes continued his outstanding season for the Magpies, finishing with 32 disposals, 15 clearances and a goal. William Bella also had a major impact, collecting 14 disposals, five clearances and four goals.
For the Creekers, Nathan Searl played a crucial role across half-back and through transition, recording 29 disposals, 14 rebound 50s and two goals. Dale Marshall was equally influential, finishing with 25 disposals, seven clearances and three goals in another strong performance.
Hurstbridge returned to the winners’ list with a hard-fought 13-point victory over West Preston-Lakeside.
After a challenging month of football, the Bridges responded with an important four points, leading at every change and never surrendering control of the contest. While they were unable to completely shake the Roosters, they consistently found answers whenever the visitors threatened.
Despite the loss, West Preston-Lakeside will take plenty of positives from the performance. The Roosters have now pushed two quality opponents deep into matches in consecutive weeks and continue to show signs that a breakthrough victory may not be far away.
Cam Wild was instrumental for Hurstbridge, finishing with 31 disposals, nine clearances and two goals. Blake Fitzgerald provided outstanding support through the midfield, collecting 35 disposals, nine clearances and two goals of his own.
Kristian Lawson once again led the way for the Roosters with 29 disposals, 15 clearances and a goal, while Felix Dreher contributed strongly with 21 disposals.
Bundoora held off a spirited final-quarter fightback from Banyule to secure an important victory and end the Bears’ hopes of claiming a third consecutive win.
The Bulls controlled much of the contest and built a 29-point advantage by three-quarter time. Banyule responded with a dominant final term and threw everything at the visitors, reducing the margin to just seven points, but Bundoora was able to hold firm in the closing stages.
Despite leading several key statistical categories, the Bears were left to rue inefficiency with ball in hand, particularly when entering their forward 50.
Liam Mallia continued his strong season for Bundoora, kicking three goals from 17 disposals, while Hugo Crawford was influential across half-back with 25 disposals and ten rebound 50s.
For Banyule, Jean-Luc Velissaris produced another dominant midfield performance with 35 disposals and 14 clearances. Kye Yodgee continued his excellent campaign with 28 disposals and nine clearances, while James Kayrooz impressed after his recent move to the wing, finishing with 16 disposals and three goals.
Eltham strengthened its position inside the top five with an 18-point victory over arch-rival Greensborough.
After a relatively even opening, the Panthers took control during the second half and gradually worked their way clear to secure an important win in the context of the finals race.
Kai Turner was outstanding across half-back for Eltham, collecting 29 disposals and 11 rebound 50s. Alexander Bellchambers continued his consistent season with 27 disposals and nine clearances.
Nathan Howard battled hard for Greensborough and was influential around stoppages, finishing with 21 disposals, 35 hitouts and 11 clearances. Jackson Davies also worked tirelessly in defence, collecting 24 disposals.
Heidelberg produced the perfect response to its first defeat of the season, dismantling North Heidelberg by 157 points in one of the most dominant performances of the year.
The Dogs made the ideal start when Nash Ramage’s tap found Brody Bell from the opening centre bounce, leading to a goal within the first 30 seconds. However, from that point onwards, Heidelberg completely controlled proceedings and dominated every area of the game.
The Tigers’ midfield and forward line were relentless throughout the afternoon, piling on score after score to record a percentage-boosting victory.
Dylan Clarke delivered one of the standout individual performances of the season, finishing with 36 disposals, 12 marks, 13 inside 50s, seven clearances and three goals. Jack Andrew added six goals, while Jordan Smith finished with five majors.
For North Heidelberg, Cooper Bugeja continued to fight hard despite the difficult circumstances, recording 23 disposals and six inside 50s.
