With every round becoming more significant, Round 12 presents several matches that could shape both the finals race and the battle to avoid relegation.

At the top end of the ladder, Diamond Creek will look to continue its remarkable winning streak, while Montmorency and Eltham meet in a clash between two genuine finals contenders. At the other end, West Preston-Lakeside has the chance to throw the relegation battle wide open.

Saturday’s clash between West Preston-Lakeside and North Heidelberg could prove to be one of the most important matches of the season for both clubs.

The Roosters enter the contest full of confidence after breaking through for its first win of 2026 with an upset victory over Eltham. After several weeks of pushing quality opposition all the way, the Roosters were finally rewarded and another win would dramatically tighten the relegation battle.

Should West Preston-Lakeside claim the four points, the fight to avoid the drop would be well and truly alive, with the Roosters, North Heidelberg and Banyule all firmly in the mix heading into the second half of the season.

North Heidelberg will also view this as a must-win opportunity after suffering consecutive heavy defeats. While the Bulldogs have battled hard throughout the year, they’ve struggled to contain opposition scoring in recent weeks and will be eager to produce a response.

The midfield battle shapes as a fascinating contest. Kristian Lawson has been instrumental in West Preston-Lakeside’s improved form, while Jamison Shea and Brock Chircop continue to provide plenty of drive for North Heidelberg.

With so much on the line, expect a desperate and physical contest between two sides that know just how important these four premiership points could become.

Diamond Creek‘s remarkable rise will face another stern test when they travel to take on Bundoora.

The Creekers have quickly become the in-form side of the competition, producing consecutive victories over Heidelberg, Montmorency and Hurstbridge. Their ability to come from behind and finish games strongly has become a hallmark of their campaign and has firmly established them as one of the premiership favourites.

Bronson Hill has continued to provide a dangerous target inside 50, while Darcy MacPherson and Dale Marshall have formed one of the competition’s most dominant midfield combinations.

Bundoora enters the clash with confidence of its own after a commanding 101-point victory over North Heidelberg. Jesse King and Liam Mallia combined for 13 goals in that performance, highlighting the Bulls’ ability to capitalise when their midfield gains control.

This shapes as a fascinating contest between two sides in strong form. Bundoora has the firepower to trouble any defence, but Diamond Creek’s confidence and ability to respond under pressure make it one of the toughest teams to beat in the competition.

After enjoying the bye, Heidelberg returns looking to continue its hold on top spot when they host Banyule.

The Tigers responded emphatically to their first defeat of the season before the split round, dismantling North Heidelberg by 157 points in one of the most dominant performances of the year. Heidelberg will be eager to maintain that momentum as the race for the minor premiership intensifies.

Dylan Clarke continues to enjoy an outstanding campaign through the midfield, while Jack Andrew and Jordan Smith have provided plenty of scoreboard impact.

Meanwhile, Banyule enters under pressure after consecutive defeats have seen it slip towards the bottom end of the ladder. Despite boasting one of the competition’s premier midfielders in Jean-Luc Velissaris, the Bears have struggled to convert strong patches of play into victories.

With the relegation battle tightening, Banyule can’t afford to let opportunities slip, although facing the ladder leaders presents one of the toughest challenges in Division 1.

A crucial contest in the race for the top five awaits when Hurstbridge hosts Greensborough.

The Bridges have shown that they can match it with the competition’s best sides despite falling just short against Diamond Creek last weekend. Blake Fitzgerald and Cam Wild continue to be among the competition’s premier midfielders, while Cooper Perrin remains a constant threat in attack.

Greensborough arrives after an impressive victory over Banyule that kept it within touching distance of the finals positions. Tom Mitchell made an outstanding return to the side, while Rayden Garrard was rewarded with five goals after an excellent team performance.

With both sides eyeing a place in September, this match could prove pivotal. The winner will strengthen its finals credentials, while the loser risks losing valuable ground in an increasingly congested ladder.

The final match of the round sees two finals contenders in Montmorency and Eltham meet in what promises to be one of the games of the weekend.

Montmorency returns from the bye looking to bounce back after a narrow loss to Diamond Creek before the split round. Despite the defeat, the Magpies remain among the competition’s strongest sides and will be eager to remind the competition why they’ve spent much of the season near the top of the ladder.

Nash Holmes continues to lead the way through the midfield, while William Bella has become a dangerous option in attack.

Eltham also enters the contest looking to respond after suffering a shock loss to West Preston-Lakeside. The Panthers have been one of the season’s biggest improvers, but they need to quickly return to their best against one of the competition’s benchmark teams.

Alexander Bellchambers and Kai Turner have been consistent performers throughout the season, and Eltham will be looking to its experienced midfield group to match Montmorency around the contest.

With both teams aiming to cement their place inside the top five, expect a high-quality contest between two sides with genuine finals ambitions.
