All the highlights from the NFNL’s win over the Essendon District Football League at the 2014 AFL Victoria Metro Championships.

2014 saw the return of senior interleague football and the NFNL marked the occasion in style, producing an impressive victory over the EDFL.

Held at Visy Park on March 29, the 2014 AFL Victoria Metropolitan Championships saw Melbourne’s six senior metropolitan football leagues go head-to-head on the same day for the first time since 1999.

AFL Victoria ranked the leagues prior to the championships, with the Victorian Amateur Football League earning the number one ranking, ahead of the Eastern Football League.

The Essendon District Football League was ranked third, with the Northern Football Netball League, Western Region Football League and Southern Football League ranked fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

The triple header began with the 5th v 6th encounter between the WRFL and SFL, followed by the 3rd v 4th clash between the EDFL and NFNL. The final match saw the VAFA take on the EFL for the right to be named the best metropolitan football league in Melbourne.

In its first representative game since 2008, the NFNL was never headed in the 13.9 (87) to 7.8 (50) result at Ikon Park, reversing its loss to the EDFL when the sides last met six years prior.
