After a fantastic 2017 Division 2 NFNL Women’s season that included a preliminary final berth, Darebin is looking to improve again in 2018.

The Falcons will face La Trobe University, Laurimar, South Morang, Montmorency, VU Western Spurs and West Preston-Lakeside in Division 2 of the ANZ NFNL Women’s competition this year.

After a pre-season with a focus on development, the Falcons are braced to hit the ground running in 2018, according to their coach Julia Boyle.

“The team is ready to go. We’re excited to start playing matches now,” Boyle said.

“It’s a bit difficult to get a good gauge on our team at the moment with a few new girls joining and few leaving.

“We have had some girls move up to our Division 1 team but that’s what happens when you’re a big club and you have so many teams.

“We still have a lot of development to go because we have about 10 new players in the team. We have to get them used to the style of football that we play so that might take a few weeks.”

After last year losing the preliminary final to West Preston-Lakeside by a mere five points, Boyle believes her new-look side has the ability to back up its strong 2017 season.

“There will be some fire in the belly when we play this year that’s for sure,” Boyle said
“Our goal is to go one win better. I think we have the potential to play finals again.”

With a bye in Round 1, Darebin will play its first match on April 15 away against South Morang at Mill Park Lakes Reserve.
