Donnybrook accepted into NFNL

Donnybrook Football Netball Club has been accepted into the Northern Football Netball League.

The club was unanimously voted into the NFNL by affiliate members at the 2021 Annual General Meeting.

Donnybrook will compete in the league’s junior football competition in its inaugural season, with the hope of also fielding netball teams.

Based within the Olivine estate, the club is located in the centre of the Northern growth corridor.

A working group was established at the beginning of 2020 to commence planning for a new sporting club within the expanding Donnybrook area.

The working group comprised representatives from the NFNL, AFL Victoria and Olivine estate developer, Mirvac, along with members of the Donnybrook community.

An Auskick centre was introduced during the 2021 season, with 30 children from the Donnybrook community attending.

Ahead of its presentation to NFNL member clubs, Donnybrook’s committee was voted in last month, with Luke Thorneycroft appointed the club’s inaugural president.

NFNL chief executive Peter McDougall said Donnybrook would be a valuable addition to the league.

“On behalf of the NFNL, we welcome Donnybrook Football Netball Club,” McDougall said.

“The committee, led by Luke Thorneycroft, has done a tremendous amount of work to establish the club and we look forward to watching Donnybrook’s journey in the NFNL.

“Given the population growth throughout the Donnybrook area, we are extremely pleased to have a club based within the community’s heartland to provide football and netball teams to the residents of the area.”

As per AFL Victoria guidelines, the decision will now need to be ratified by AFL Victoria.
