St Mary’s and Eltham tuned up with big wins in Round 6 ahead of their much-anticipated clash this coming weekend.
St Mary’s were the biggest winners of the weekend, piling on a massive 136 points against Diamond Creek to run away with a dominant win.
Nine Burra players kicked goals, highlighted by Megan Girolami kicking five, Sarah Johnston kicking four and Maykaylah Appleby finishing with three.
Brigid McEntee chalked up ten Coaches MVP votes for her game and Elyssa Rees was also prominent with seven votes to her name.
Linda Thorp and Paris Gay were best afield for Diamond Creek in a tough afternoon’s footy for the Demons.
Eltham, similarly to the Burra, continue to prove a class above defeating Banyule by 72 points. The Panthers were never really troubled as a two-goal quarter time lead opened up a 32-point lead by half time, before they extended away in the second half.
Eltham captain Michaela Molenberg kicked four goals and stays at the top of the Coaches MVP voting, but Jemma Laffey was recognised for her efforts with nine votes.
Annabel Goodison was clearly Banyule’s best player of the day and both coaches agreed, awarding her seven votes as she led the Bears who couldn’t convert their opportunities inside 50 with six behinds for the match.
Lower Plenty and Montmorency played out the closest result of the weekend, with the Magpies winning by 20 points and moving two wins clear of the chasing pack in third spot on the ladder.
Both sides would have liked to convert more of their chances, with seven goals kicked from 27 scoring shots across the match. It was Montmorency who had the better of the first half to head to half time 13 points in front.
The Magpies continued to chip away in the second half, with three goals after the main break enough to keep the Bears at bay.
Madeline Gallagher, Emily Gallagher and Madeline Ellis were all among the best players for the visitors, while Lauren Brazzale continued her good form for Lower Plenty and was given Coaches MVP votes by both sides.
All sides will feel as though they have a great opportunity to record a win next week as St Mary’s and Eltham play off for top spot, a battle of the Bears takes place as Banyule hosts Lower Plenty and Diamond Creek looks to get on the board against Heidelberg coming off the bye.
