With just two rounds remaining in the NFNL Division 1 home-and-away season, the race for September is reaching boiling point.
Round 16 produced several significant results, with Banyule stunning Diamond Creek, Montmorency moving into second and Greensborough breaking into the top five.
There is now little room for error for the sides fighting for finals spots, while the teams higher up the ladder will be looking to build momentum before September.
North Heidelberg vs Banyule
North Heidelberg will host a desperate Banyule outfit at Ford Park in a crucial clash for the Bears’ finals hopes.
Banyule enter the contest with plenty of confidence after producing one of the biggest results of Round 16, overcoming Diamond Creek by seven points. The Bears trailed at every change before producing a brilliant final quarter to complete the comeback and claim the four points.
Their ability to capitalise on Diamond Creek turnovers proved decisive, with 51 of Banyule’s 68 points coming from turnover.
Liam Mackie was outstanding across half-back with 30 disposals, eight intercept possessions and seven rebound 50s, while Jean-Luc Velissaris collected 30 disposals, 11 clearances and a goal. Oliver Poole was also influential with 29 disposals, 10 intercept possessions and five inside 50s.
Banyule will need another strong contribution from its midfield and defensive group if it is to overcome North Heidelberg and continue its charge towards September.
The Bulldogs will be looking for a much-improved performance after suffering a 73-point defeat to Greensborough last weekend. Jamison Shea was one of North Heidelberg’s better players with 29 touches and will again be important around the contest.
With Banyule’s finals hopes hanging in the balance, this is a game the Bears simply cannot afford to drop.
Diamond Creek vs Eltham
Diamond Creek will return home to Coventry Oval looking to immediately respond after its upset loss to Banyule.
The Creekers appeared in control for much of last week’s contest, leading at every change before Banyule produced a decisive final term.
Diamond Creek will be keen to put that result behind it and regain the form that had seen it establish itself near the top of the ladder.
Nathan Searl was a standout against Banyule, collecting 28 disposals and an impressive 16 rebound 50s, while Dale Marshall and Jacob Booth both finished with 32 touches. Marshall also won 13 clearances, with Booth laying nine tackles.
Eltham comes into the clash after a difficult afternoon against Heidelberg, suffering a 105-point defeat.
The Panthers will be hoping to produce a far more competitive performance at Coventry Oval, with Kai Turner leading the way with 31 disposals last week.
Eltham has an opportunity to play spoiler against a Diamond Creek side that will be desperate to bounce back. For the Creekers, the focus will be on returning to their best football and making the most of home-ground advantage.
Bundoora vs Montmorency
A blockbuster awaits at Yulong Reserve, with Bundoora hosting Montmorency in one of the most anticipated clashes of Round 17.
Both sides are coming off dominant victories and will enter the contest with plenty of confidence.
Bundoora were ruthless against West Preston-Lakeside last weekend, cruising to a 105-point victory after kicking 20 goals.
Keegan Downie was the star up forward, booting seven goals from 22 disposals, while Jesse King added four goals from 18 touches. Liam Mallia also continued his strong season through the midfield with 31 disposals.
Montmorency were just as impressive, defeating Hurstbridge by 72 points to move into second position on the ladder.
Nash Holmes produced another excellent performance with 34 disposals and two goals, while Stefan Uzelac dominated the ruck and stoppage battle with 30 disposals, 15 clearances and 34 hitouts.
The midfield battle will be fascinating, while Bundoora’s dangerous forward line will present a major challenge for the Montmorency defence.
With both clubs eyeing a strong finish to the home-and-away season, there is plenty on the line at Yulong Reserve. Expect a high-quality contest between two sides with genuine premiership aspirations.
Hurstbridge vs Heidelberg
Hurstbridge face one of their biggest challenges of the season when Heidelberg travels to Ben Frilay Memorial Oval.
The Bridges enter the contest sitting sixth on the ladder and half a game outside the top five following last week’s heavy defeat to Montmorency.
Hurstbridge will know that another loss could make their path to September considerably more difficult, making this a genuine must-win encounter.
Liam Middleton was a consistent performer against Montmorency, collecting 28 disposals and seven clearances, while Lachlan East provided plenty of drive around the ground with 21 disposals and 13 marks.
However, Heidelberg represents the toughest challenge in local footy.
The Tigers continued their dominant season last week with a 105-point demolition of Eltham. Zane Barzen was unstoppable inside 50, finishing with seven goals, while Luke Bunker produced an enormous performance with 46 disposals, 12 clearances and a goal.
Dylan Clarke was also prominent with 33 touches as Heidelberg controlled the contest from the outset.
Hurstbridge will need to find a way to slow Heidelberg’s midfield dominance and limit its scoring opportunities. With finals on the line for the Bridges, expect a desperate effort at home.
West Preston-Lakeside vs Greensborough
West Preston-Lakeside will be looking to bounce back when it hosts a confident Greensborough side at JE Moore Park Oval.
The Boro enter the contest sitting fifth after an important 73-point victory over North Heidelberg last weekend.
The result was another strong performance from Greensborough at an important stage of the season, with Blake Watson collecting 27 disposals and kicking two goals, while Brody Glenn finished with three majors from 20 disposals.
Greensborough now have a finals position to defend and will be desperate to keep their place inside the top five with only two games remaining.
West Preston-Lakeside will be determined to respond after a tough afternoon against Bundoora, going down by 105 points.
Arben Dani was one of the few positives for the Eagles, finishing with 36 disposals and two goals. West Preston-Lakeside will need a much stronger team performance if it is to challenge a Greensborough side that is building momentum.
The home side will have the advantage of JE Moore Park Oval, but Greensborough will head into the contest knowing a victory could be crucial to its finals hopes.
