NFNL Statement – June 4-6 Matches

Published on Wednesday, June 2, 2021

Following today’s announcement that the Greater Melbourne lockdown will extend a further seven days, all NFNL football and netball matches scheduled for June 4-6 have been cancelled.

As per the cancellation of all games last weekend, these matches will not be rescheduled.

With the Queen’s Birthday long weekend to follow next weekend, this will provide an extra week to allow for the number of new COVID cases to reduce and hopefully allow all competitions to resume the following weekend, June 18-20.

My recommendation to all coaches and players is to maintain your fitness levels and be ready to play at short notice. This is not ideal, but neither is the environment we are living in, and we have to adapt accordingly to get back to some sort of normal lifestyle.

No doubt you will all have many questions on the Return to Play protocols, and as they come to hand, we will continue to keep you updated.

I expect some of these protocols to have an impact, in particular, to indoor crowd numbers (i.e. social rooms). Hopefully, clubs will be able to operate at a reasonable level to avoid a significant negative financial impact.

AFL Victoria Development Series

The AFL Victoria Development Series for our junior representative teams, which was set to be played over the Queen’s Birthday weekend is now more than likely to be postponed.

We are committed to playing these matches at a later date, and we will work with AFL Victoria to find the best time to play.

To all involved in the AFL Victoria Development Series, please stay patient and eventually you will get the opportunity to represent the NFNL.

In the meantime, please stay safe and hopefully we are back to playing football and netball sooner rather than later.

Yours sincerely,

Peter McDougall
Chief Executive Officer
Northern Football Netball League
