NFNL Statement: Monday 6th July

Published on Monday, July 6, 2026

The NFNL community is devastated by the tragic news of Epping player Nathan Fitzgerald being provided end-of-life care.

The thoughts and deepest condolences of the NFNL board and staff are with his family, friends, teammates and the Epping Football Netball Club as they endure this very difficult time. We are doing all we can to ensure they don’t carry this burden alone with the support of the AFL and AFL Victoria.

Our thoughts are also with the Lalor Football Netball Club, its players, officials and supporters who were so close to this terrible accident and the Mernda Central College community, where Nathan is a valued and respected teacher.

Nathan’s situation has been felt by the entire football community and beyond. A solemn reminder of just how precious life is.

The league wishes to again acknowledge the Epping and Lalor medical staff and the emergency services personnel who treated and cared for Nathan. They did all they could in very trying circumstances.

NFNL clubs and umpires will be encouraged to join together before the start of each match this coming weekend for a minute of reflection for Nathan and in support of his family.

The league’s focus is firmly on supporting Nathan’s family and our clubs and we won’t be drawn into discussions regarding ground conditions for local football.
