Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1 - Finals Week One Review

Eltham and Banyule have won their respective finals in week one of the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1 finals series.

Eltham got off to a slow start in its qualifying final against Montmorency, the Magpies kicking the only two goals of the opening term through Jessica Nursey and Georgia Thomson.

The Panthers responded in the second term however, dominating the territory battle to have eight scoring shots for the term with goals to Dayna Kelly, Michaela Molenberg and Abbey Vaughan as Eltham took an 11-point lead to half time.

The third term continued to be a tussle, with Eltham kicking another two goals to maintain their lead at the final change. The fourth quarter was where the game broke open for the Panthers, with five unanswered goals blowing the winning margin out to 48 points.

Emily Wunderlich’s three goals was the standout performance for Eltham and she was awarded best on ground honours along with co-captain Mary Robinson. Vaughan and Molenberg finished with two goals each and the games of Jess van Hattum and Poppy Toth also caught the eye.

Bridie Watson, Shelby Lemire, Molly Mcerlain and Madeline Ellis were busy for Montmorency across the afternoon, but the Magpies struggled to find avenues to goal through Eltham’s sturdy defence. They’ll face Banyule next up in the semi final next weekend while Eltham will play minor premiers St Mary’s in the second qualifying final.

Banyule won a thrilling elimination final against Heidelberg, the Bears victorious by just two points to keep their finals campaign alive.

The first half was a low-scoring affair with Banyule kicking the only goal of the half and keeping the Tigers scoreless heading to the main break.

But Heidelberg roared to life in the third term, putting on 4.3 to just one behind for Banyule to suddenly lead by 15 points at the final change.

The Bears were able to make the most of the wind advantage in the final term, a goal to Olivia Mincone put them within touching distance before a long-range effort from Daisy Getson put Banyule in front with about five minutes to play. From there the Bears held on to advance and continue on their finals run.

Annabel Goodison was given best on ground by the Banyule coaching staff and the efforts of Tannah Hurst, Mackenzie Prentice, Keely Welsh and Lily Goodison were also recognised. Heidelberg best players weren’t available at the time of writing.

Finals action will continue this weekend at La Trobe University.
