North meets West

The Northern Football League will square off against the Western Region Football League in the 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships.

The NFL will host the match at a venue to be determined in consultation with the WRFL.

The fixture for next year’s Championships was released Friday.

Matches will be held on the weekend of May 13-14, with 32 country and metropolitan leagues don their representative colours and battle it out at venues right across Victoria.

The NFL will schedule a bye across all senior men’s competitions that weekend to ensure no clubs are adversely impacted by players being selected in the representative team.

Having lost its past two senior representative matches, the Northern Football League has slipped to fifth spot on the AFL Victoria Community Championships rankings.

The WRFL pushed up the rankings this year with a three-point win over the Ballarat Football Netball League at Whitten Oval.

The NFL lost a high-scoring game to the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League this year, where a win would have elevated the league into the No.1 play-off in 2017.

After leading for much of the opening half, the NFL couldn’t contain the MPNFL’s scoring power late in the contest as it suffered a 18.14 (122) to 14.8 (92) loss at Rye’s R.J Rowley Oval.

The result followed a shattering five-point to the VAFA last year in the former AFL Victoria Metropolitan Championships, where the NFL led for all but the final five minutes in the 7.7 (49) to 5.14 (44) loss.

Further details on the league’s representative program, including under-19 and netball matches, will be announced early next year.
